Sometimes if audio is glitching we will reach out to people and ask them to take glitch traces so we can look at them and try to figure out what is going on.
One of the tools we use to take audio glitch traces on Windows 10 phone editions is Field Medic; this is an app in the Windows Store.
To take audio glitch traces on a Windows 10 phone:
- On the phone: install the Field Medic app https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/store/apps/Field-Medic/9WZDNCRFJB82
- Plug the phone into a computer via USB
- On the computer:
- On the phone:
- Open the Field Medic app | Advanced | Choose which ETW providers to use
- Check the following boxes:
- Default Group | Multimedia
- Custom Group | Non-Exclusive-Performance.xml
- Back to "advanced"
- Back to "Field Medic"
- Start Logging; notice that logging is now in progress
- Do the thing that causes the glitches; the logging will continue in the background
- Open the Field Medic app | Stop Logging
- Enter a report title | Save. You can also choose Delete if you want to discard the trace (for example, if it didn't glitch), or add images if you like
- Unplug the phone from the computer and plug it in again
- On the computer:
At this point you have a .zip file containing a pair of .etl files. These can be analyzed using any tool that consumes .etl files, including:
- Windows Performance Analyzer, which is part of the Windows Performance Toolkit, which is part of the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK)
